Service Learning Project (SLP) Online Summer and After School Labs Project
Service Learning Project is geared towards students in grades 4-12 to learn about activism and independent problem solving. Each cohort, for instance elementary and middle school, are facilitated with a mentor who will give them extra support. In this 8-12 week program students work together to find a solution to a social issue (of their choice). I spoke to a representative at SLP and they provided more details about the program. The PURPOSE of Service Learning Projects
“All SLP programs have the same goal: to help young people become leaders and agents of positive change in their schools and communities by working together to help solve a social problem of their choice. Every SLP project has a real impact on a real social issue. Our hope is that young people will complete Lab feeling more confident about using their strong voices, more optimistic about their very real capacity to solve social problems, and with a better understanding of the avenues of change.”- SLP

SLP offers virtual Labs to three age groups: Elementary (4th-5th), Middle (6th-8th), and High school (9th-12th). “SLP is a K-12 program generally but with the Labs, our first virtual program, we made a decision to start at grade 4.”
How are students supported during the program?
Each group will meet weekly for 45-60 minutes with an experienced Facilitator and a teen advisor. “Although each phase of the project is student-led, both the facilitator and teen advisor provide extensive support throughout the process to help students accomplish their goals.” They are both available between sessions to answer questions and advise them on independent work completed between zoom sessions.
Week 1: Introduction and Issue Brainstorm
Students will get to know each other and the SLP process. They will also brainstorm a list of possible issues to work on.
Week 2-3: Issue Selection
Students come to consensus on one social problem to help solve (this process includes small group pitches for specific issues).
Weeks 4-8: Research
Students become experts on their issue by conducting extensive research both as a group and independently for at least 30 minutes per week. They will decide what research activities to conduct but typical examples include online research, data collection, surveying members of their community, interviewing experts, and more!
Week 8-10: Action Planning
Students consider a range of possible solutions and then decide which one(s) they believe would be most effective. They then develop a plan to implement or advocate for their solution.
Week 11-12: Take Action! And Reflect
Previous SLP projects include advocacy campaigns directed at local legislators, producing Public Service Announcements (PSA) and other awareness raising campaigns
How and When Do I Apply?
Applications due dates are not known as of yet. To be notified of when applications open, sign the interest form. You must be a student in grades 4-12. Report cards are not required to receive a scholarship. Applications are brief and you do not need to provide report card grades. If you need a full or partial scholarship, please email firstname.lastname@example.org , as soon as possible.
The cost of the program is $250. Full or partial scholarships are available and needs are 100% met. SLP does their best to fundraise enough money for the programs. The cost of the program would provide scholarships for other students and to fund the program. Do not feel discouraged by this! So far, SLP has been able to accommodate every family that has requested either a full or partial scholarship.
After The Program (Support)
“We love for our students to stay connected to SLP! Some have decided to join a second or even third Lab. We offer new advocacy opportunities on their issues when possible and encourage them to reach out for support anytime if they stay involved in advocating for their chosen issue.”
